Digital Society Day 2008

Karnataka Institute for Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs (KILPAR) and KLE Society's Kaw College, (KLESC), Bangalore to join in commemoration of Digital Society Day 2008

As in the previous years, Digital Society Foundation (Trust promoted by Naavi and others) will celebrate October 17, 2008 as the Digital Society Day of India in recognition of the fact that on October 17, 2000, ITA 2000 was given effect to bringing in the legal recognition for electronic documents for the first time in India. We remember that prior to October 17, 2000, no electronic transaction in India could claim legal validity. By providing for recognition of digital documents and digital signature, ITA 2000 ushered in a new Digital Era in India.

DSFI welcomes all organizations interested in Netizen welfare in India, e-Governance, e-Commerce, Cyber Laws etc to celebrate the day so that we remeber the momentous conversion of the Indian Physical Society to a Recognized Digital Society.

(To remove any doubts, we clarify that the Digital Society Day is not a celebration of the foundation of the Digital Society Foundation which is a Trust aimed at catalysing the Netizen welfare programmes in association with other agencies. )

The theme for the current year Seminar is "Privacy and Data Protection in Cyber Space".

In recent days we are seeing increased use of Internet, Mobiles and E-mail for commission of Terrorist activities and Cyber Crimes in India. These offences committed on the Digital Society adversely affects the Physical society. Many non Netizens must therefore be feeling that perhaps life would have been better if there was no development of Internet, E-Mail, Mobile communication etc.

One of the offshoots of the recent crimes is that the law enforcement while trying to track the perpetrators of the crime end up with barriers to information from intermediaries under the claim that information cannot be released because of "Privacy Rights". Whether it is the ISP or the MSP (Mobile Service Provider) or a Web hosting company, information which is vital for Police investigations is often held back from the Police under various pretexts until it is too late for any action.

In the light of this conflict between the needs of the Law Enforcement and the Privacy Protectors of the Society the proposed Data Protection Act, for which the bill is pending before the Parliament assumes greater importance. Will it recognize the conflict between Privacy Rights and the Security Needs of the Society? Will it provide the "Right Balance"? .. are some of the thoughts that come across our minds.

This year's seminar therefore addresses these issues.
