A message was received by me from some of my alert IT friends about
a Virus that is likely to strike on June 1st.
I found the subject file on my computer too and therefore alerted
some of my friends. The message apparently came from a reliable source which was a close group of technologists
.
The details were as follows.
The details of the virus are as follows:
The virus is found in a file named SULFNBK.EXE which resides in
the Windows/Command file. It is presumed that it might have entered through
e-mail.
No Virus software appears to be able to detect it.
It will become active on June 1, 2001 and wipe out all
files and folders on the hard drive.
To find it and get rid of it off of your computer, do the following.
Go to the "START" button.
Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH"
Go to "FILES & FOLDERS"
Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive.
Type in: SULFNBK.EXE
Begin search.
If it finds it, highlight it.
Go to 'File' and delete it.
Close the find Dialog box
Open the Recycle Bin
Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin
You should be safe.
Inform your friends.
Within a short time, I also got similar alerts from many sources.
After a while, I have been informed by another IT specialist that the said file is a "Microsoft Utility" for handling long file names
and the alert is as such a "Hoax". I am waiting for confirmation from Mcafee/K7.
However, this is an indication of how some mischievous minds
take pleasure in inconveniencing others.
