The Institute of Chartered Accountants in India has set up an
IT Lab in Chennai with a view to give it's members, hands on training in
IT Security Audit.
Inaugurating the facility today (17th December 2004), Mr
Sunil Goyal, President of ICAI highlighted the need for CA's to adapt to the
changing business environment. The Chairman of the IT Committee of ICAI, Mr
Harinderjit Singh, in his Keynote address drew the attention of the audience to
the possibility of a legislation of the
Sarbanes Oxley type
in India which is under consideration by SEBI. Mr S.Ravindran, CEO of Sundaram
Foundation was present as the Guest of Honour while Mr J.Venkateswurulu,
Chairman SIRC presided over the meeting. Mr Venkataramana, a member of the
Central Council explained the facilities and how they are proposing to be used.
The Proof of Concept Information Technology laboratory/Center
of excellence has been set up with an objective to provide practical exposure to
the members in IT Audit Tools and training in Information Security aspects.
It is also expected that the center may cover training in
Fraud Examination training as well as Accounting and Implementation of ERP and
Core Banking Software.
The facility is a welcome addition to the efforts of ICAI in
assisting its members to manage the transition from the paper based accounting
era to IT based accounting era.
